In any Rite of Passage every juncture is necessary for the novitiate to eventually break through and get consummated, but it is the middle stage of liminality, a state of mental and spiritual limbo during which the ‘novice’ is nor here nor there, betwixt and between, enveloped in a preternatural ‘rumspringa’, where real and deep change takes place. This is Anti-Structure: a space of ambiguity, paradox and drama.
The term Anti-Structure was coined by cultural anthropologist Victor Turner (1920 – 1983) to describe this stage of mid-transition (or limen, signifying “threshold” in Latin) during which “normal social roles and rules are temporarily voided; structural hierarchies are flattened or inverted; and/or symbolic or socially constructed boundaries are abrogated.” (The Ritual Process: Structure and Antistructure, 1969. Victor Turner)
Whereas the dominant ideology du jour, driven by its version of ‘The Protestant Ethic’ was that any such breakdown would result in anomie and angst, Turner recognized its possibility and potential. He noticed that it is exactly during such moments of dissolution and great happenstance that culture reboots itself, “a proto- structural domain in which new symbols, models, and paradigms arise-as the seedbeds of cultural creativity.” (Liminal to Liminoid, in Play, Flow and Ritual, An Essay in Comparative Symbology, 1974. Victor Turner).
It is not unusual to find such pockets of radical novelty buried deep in the underground, the pregnant margins of normative order. It is in these lands of strangers and exiles, artists and poets, that one finds fertile ground for radical thought and very strange ideas.
The underground music scene and its flamboyant entourage which flourished in and around Attica in the 1970-80s, well documented by Yorgos Tourkovasilis was one such case… Lycabettus Theater, Takis Zenetos’ brilliant design, in its heyday as a place of convergence and of magico-religious stature was another…
These are but just a few examples where ideas and rituals, cultivated in the fringes of institutionalized etiquette, bring forth novel ways of dress, posture, and expression, attitudes that when fully formed feed back into the system to either break or make the mainstream.
