This exhibition started as a discussion around ceramics and the various iterations of the ancient Kernos vessel*. Ripe with meaning both apparent and obscure, the Kernos lends itself to a multitude of interpretations as it does uses. Unfortunately, the Κernoi will bepresent through their absence due to the cumbersome local bureaucratic processes that would not allow us to exhibit them.
As such, we redirected our focus beyond the Kernos, exploring instead the shifts that occur through the inevitable appropriations of an object.
Within its lifespan it will be utilised, broken, fixed, traded, sold, swapped, discarded
and reused – transitioning in function and meaning from one state to the next as though recasting itself anew. Interpretations of perceived affordances fluctuate through time
and variable conditions i.e. knowledge structures, cultural and semantic conventions, environmental changes, etc., suggesting an object can be afforded numerous lives within its individual trajectory.
It is this multiplicity that intrigued us in the first place and brings these works together in exhibition, as fluid and open-ended signifiers of a mutable and manifold nature.
Η έκθεση ξεκίνησε ως μια συζήτηση πάνω στην κεραμική και τις ποικίλες εκδοχές του αρχαίου αγγείου Κέρνος*. Πλούσιος σε προφανείς αλλά και μυστήριες σημασίες, ο Κέρνος επιδέχεται τόσες ερμηνείες όσες και χρήσεις. Δυστυχώς οι Κέρνοι θα είναι παρόντες δια της απουσίας τους λόγω της ακαμψίας των τοπικών γραφειοκρατικών διαδικασιών που δεν μας επέτρεψαν να τους εκθέσουμε.
Δεδομένων των περιστάσεων, εστιάσαμε πέρα από τον ίδιο τον Κέρνο, διερευνώντας, αντ’ αυτού, τις μικρές παρεκκλίσεις που προκύπτουν κατά τις αναπόφευκτες οικειοποιήσεις ενός αντικειμένου.
Στη διάρκεια της ζωής του θα χρησιμοποιηθεί, θα σπάσει θα φτιαχτεί, θα εμπορευματοποιηθεί, θα πωληθεί, θα ανταλλαχθεί, θα πεταχτεί και θα ξανα- χρησιμοποιηθεί, μεταβαίνοντας όσον αφορά σε χρήση και νόημα από τη μία κατάσταση στην επόμενη σαν σε διαρκή αναδιαμόρφωση. Οι ερμηνείες των δυνατοτήτων προσέγγισης που ανοίγονται εξαρτώνται από τον χρόνο και από μεταβλητές συνθήκες όπως γνωστικές δομές, πολιτισμικές και σημασιολογικές συμβάσεις, περιβαλλοντικές αλλαγές, κτλ. υποδηλώνοντας ότι ένα αντικείμενο μπορεί να έχει πάμπολλες ζωές κατά τη διάρκεια της μίας, ατομικής του διαδρομής.
Αυτή ακριβώς η πολυμορφία είναι που μας συνάρπασε από την αρχή και που φέρνει όλα αυτά τα έργα να εκτίθενται μαζί, ως ρευστά και ανοιχτά σημαίνοντα μιας ευμετάβλητης και πολλαπλής φύσης.
